>> CANBERRA, Australia -- A champion German paraglider said yesterday she didn't think she'd survive being lifted higher than Mount Everest by a thunderstorm in Australia.

Ewa Wisnierska, 35, was lifted 9,940 metres above sea level by a storm that apparently killed a Chinese paraglider Wednesday.

The pilots were preparing for the 10th FAI World Paragliding Championships next week, event organizer Godfrey Wenness said.

He Zhongpin, 42, died during the same weather system, Wenness said.

Wisnierska described how she attempted to skirt the thunderstorm and when that failed, attempted to spiral against its powerful lift.

"It's like winning Lotto 10 times in a row -- the odds of her surviving were that long," Wenness said. >>>

>> Police say a post-mortem examination has revealed a 42-year-old paraglider who died after being sucked into a storm cell in northern New South Wales last week was struck by lightning.

"It's actually entered under the armpit area and exited out around the groin area," he said.

"When they're flying, obviously their hands are above their heads and the lightning's found some part of the body for entry and that's what's caused all the damage.">>

The Survivor
>> Paragliding expert and the organiser of next week's world paragliding championships near Tamworth, Godfrey Weness, says the event it is similar to climbing Mount Everest in less than 15 minutes.

"She was covered in ice all over her body and her harness and equipment - it's minus 40 to minus 50 degrees at that altitude," he said.

"There's no oxygen - she could have potentially suffered brain damage and other issues to do with hypoxia."

Mr Weness says the paraglider was unconscious for around an hour.

"She had ice secretion all over her body, the wing was covered in ice, internally as well," he said.

"She's got severe frost bite over her face and coming out in blisters." >>

>> Iceland may not be the first country to enter your mind when you think about snorkeling or scuba diving

The place to go diving or snorkeling in Iceland is definitely Silfra, a fissure crack at Þingvellir National Park. It’s a no-man’s-land where the plateaus of Europe and America are gliding apart.

Someone at Dive Magazine says Silfra is among the top ten diving sites in the world, and according to him it’s “probably best described as the closest experience to space-walking you are ever likely to get.â€
